comments: I am 30 years old and a BA student of corporate management and
economics at zeppelin university in Friedrichshafen, Germany. I have
been involved in a local complementary currency in Berlin, Germany
(Berliner Regional) in 2005 and have studied different options to set up
and run such a tool for local and regional sustainable economic
development. Our current monetary system promotes unsustainable
development and complementary currency system are an option to actually
build up an alternative economic system. By complementing legal tender
they offer a practical solution for the problems of unsustainable
economic and social development.
At the spring meeting of the innovators club (www.innovatorsclub.de) in
April 2008 I presented a adoption of the WIR Bank model for use in
german municipalities. As demonstrated by the suisse WIR Bank, the
capability to grant mixed loans composed of national and complementary
currency helps a lot in order to set up a stable ccs with a big
economic impact.
For my girlfriend has moved to Cape Town in September last year I looked
for an opportunity to become involved in sustainable economic
development in the region of Cape Town. Since the 19th of may 2008 I am
in Cape Town to develop and set up a social enterprise that offers
entrepreneurs in the township Khayelitsha (the second largest township
in South Africa) micro-credits composed of South African Rand and a cc
called Talent. So far the design of the system is very close to the WIR
Bank but I haven't decided yet if that is the best option. I am closely
working together with two NGOs already working in the field
(www.sane.org.za and www.vpuu.org) but still I need more people to talk
to about the concept and eventually build up a team that conducts the
feasibility study for this social enterprise. In mid September 2008 the
business plan should be worked out so the start up can take place asap.
The whole process is supported by the innovators club, thus the results
from Khayelitsha possibly may help to set up similar social enterprises
for poorer municipalities in Germany.
