[cc_research] cashing in on local currencies

Hi Stephen,
I'm a self-confessed parasite when it comes to local currencies. I study non-national currencies, past and present, for what they say about the nature of money and its characteristics as a social institution. As for modern local currencies, they interest me but I'm not about to start one myself!
In the grand scheme of things, I think the potential for cc systems to make the world a better place is real but limited. Like microfinance, alternative monetary and financial forms may thrive in the interstices of modern capitalism, but short of some cataclysm they are ot about to replace it.
Can one actually get a degree in cc systems? That sounds too narrow to me. I would recommend a broader curriculum in economic development, either at the masters or doctoral level. The reigning economic paradigm has evinced such obvious problems that, more than ever, there surely is a place for creative thinking about economic development in which local forms and institutions have a real place.
best,
Loren Gatch

Greetings,
Although I have been active with complementary currencies for nearly 20
years, and have worked professionally with these systems, I so far have
not taken the opportunity to earn my MA or PhD degree in complementary
currency systems. I made that decision mainly due to my personal
financial situation, not having found an opportunity to find a way to
finance my education other than taking out a really large loan.
I would like to ask you how you have benefited professionally, in terms
of work and income from your education and research into these systems,
or how you hope to benefit professionally from your education in CC systems.
Regards,
Stephen
